Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), also known as medical skin needling, dermal needling or micro-needling, is a minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment designed to improve the skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as scars on the face and body. Micro Dermal Needling works using a specialised electric stamping device (unlike a manual handheld roller), which creates ‘micro wounds’ in the dermis of the skin, that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production by generating a wound healing response. Over time a thicker layer of tissue will develop which ‘fills in’ the cavities left by atrophic scars and wrinkles.
As with all cosmetic treatments, the ideal candidate should have realistic expectations and be in generally good health. The treatment is suitable for all skin types, unlike some laser or chemical peels procedures. There are some skin contra-indications that should be discussed like active coldsores or impetigo beforehand , so a consultation needs to precede the appointment to ensure that you may be a suitable candidate for Collagen Induction Therapy:
Before you undergo this invasive cosmetic treatment, it is important to have a consultation with Nik of Mojo Beauty, a qualified beauty therapist to ensure you are suitable for treatment. This will be your opportunity to ask any questions you have about the procedure and for her to explain the pros and cons. A medical history will be taken and you will be asked to sign a consent form to make sure you fully understand what the procedure involves and any associated risks and complications. Once your therapist has decided you are a suitable candidate, your treatment can go ahead:
The Dermal Needling Procedure
The skin is cleansed with Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse twice to sterilize and prepare it.
A topical anaesthetic, Emla Gel, is usually applied before treatment to minimise any pain and discomfort.
Hydrating serums are then applied to the skin to empower and help the machine slide.
The tip of the micro needling device will glide over your skin creating stimulating channels. The length of the needles used on the micro needling pen for Collagen Induction Therapy will vary. The longer the needle, the deeper into the skin it will penetrate, and the more dramatic results you will see.
Your treatment can take up to 1.5 hours, depending on the area you are having treated. After your Dermal Needling Treatment, you will notice a reddening of your skin and some sensitivity, this is normal. This indicates that your skin is injured and will invoke a wound healing response and the redness will fade away within 2 days. You may also get some bleeding and bruising, however this should be minimal and will depend on the length of the needle used during your treatment. The downtime with this treatment is very quick and you should have recovered between 24-72 hours.
As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The micro-channels created spontaneously close after 10 minutes so that epidermal barrier integrity remains intact. The needles injure superficial dermal collagen strands and small blood vessels triggering a controlled cascade of inflammation including the release of platelet-derived growth factors transforming growth factor-alpha and beta (TGF β-3), connective tissue activating protein, connective tissue growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor. These lead to the production of new collagen, elastin, and capillaries.
Neo-vascularisation and neo-collagenesis lead to thickened skin and a reduction of scars, with improved skin texture, firmness, and hydration.
To ensure the right healing environment, for 2 days post treatment YOU MUST AVOID using AHA’s (glycolic acid), any Retinol (vitamin A) including Medik8 Retinols or anything acidic or “active” ingredients. If you’re unsure about your skincare products, please ask Nik at Mojo Beauty.
For the next 24 hours,Nik suggests that you only use a soothing Medik8 Calmwise cleanser, and Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Intense to help hydrate as your skin will become very dry. Ensure that you use Medik8 Physical sunscreen if you'll be in the sunshine as your skin will be compromised and vulnerable for a few weeks afterwards.
Avoid sweaty exercise and sun exposure for 72 hours post-treatment.
Nik at Mojo Beauty will encourage you to use active specific cosmeceutical grade skincare such as Medik8, to enhance your treatment results.
Because the results of dermal needling rely on kick-starting your body’s own collagen production, it can take up to eight weeks before you start to fully see the benefits. A series of between four and six treatments is usually recommended to achieve maximum results.
